  1. Chris was accepted into Florida State University in March or May 2016 for Spring 2017 semester (he does not know the exact month). As he was ecstatic to becoming to Florida State University and all the opportunities he could find and experience while in college. He came up in the fall to take some classes at Tallahassee Community College to pass the time and to get some classes under his belt. As he was taking classes at Tallahassee Community College, he received a phone call from Florida State University. They informed him that his high school transcripts did not match his SARR records so they would need him to come in a meet with an admiration employee to discuss things farther. So, Chris went to meet with the admiration employee and was informed they would be revoking his acceptance to Florida State. He was shocked and very much confused. Even though he was shocked the employee did give him some advice as how Florida State could re-accept him and he could take classes at Florida State in the spring as planned. The first option was he could take five extra classes at Tallahassee Community College and get A’s and B’s in them or the second option was to take more classes at Tallahassee Community College and get re-accepted, but not until Fall or Summer of 2017. Chris decided to take the extra five classes, obviously because he is taking classes at Florida State during spring, and he received only one B out those five classes and received A’s in the rest. As you can tell, he is now Seminole and is working towards his degree.

  2. Divorce has become more and more popular over the years but that does not make it any less devastating to the families it affects. When Leah was in only 4th grade, about 9 years of age her parents split up. To not worry the many children they had, they both agreed on keeping it quiet for a while until they were ready to inform Leah and her siblings. For about a month or two Leah's dad was sleeping at her uncles house about 30 minutes down the road while the rest of the family carried on with their normal lives. Soon enough, though they would all see their father, they began to catch on that he was not home as much as he used to be. Finally the parents agreed it was time to let them know what was going on, and though it was sad, Leah knew from almost the beginning that it was happening. Luckily there was a fair split in the time the children got to spend with their father and mother and they made it through as many families try to do. Soon enough, both of her parents began dating other people again. It was not until in the 7th grade they were both remarried to their new spouses. And with their new spouses came new step siblings for the families to and grow up together with. Something positive that can come from parents splitting is how they can then better themselves with a new acquaintance and families can grow. Leah would not have the relationships she has with her step siblings today if it had not happened. Though it may not have been the best time of her life, she certainly gained a lot.

  3. The summer of 2013 was just like any other for Becca until her aunt called her mom asking if she wanted to go to Italy with them. Like any teenager, she eagerly accepted her Aunts invitation and began counting down the days until the trip began. Becca’s "squad" for the trip would consist her aunt and her three cousins. The first place they visited was Venice and everyone had a great time. The next day was going to be a long one since they were heading over to Rome via a train. The morning started off rocky considering that they missed the first train to Rome from Venice. They caught the second train to Rome and, after they arrived, went straight to the place they were staying at which was a bed and breakfast. Once they got to the room, they unpacked and started to get ready to go out and take in the sights of Rome. Before they left the room, they hid all their important belongings throughout the room since they had heard that robberies were quite commonplace and they didn't want to take anything of value with them. After a fun day in Rome they all came back to the room to freshen up and get ready to eat dinner. They reached the door but realized that it was unopenable, so Becca took a credit card and opened the door. To everyone’s amazement they found the room torn apart, their passports were ripped on the floor, and everything of value was stolen. They immediately told the police and filled out a report. The police told them that they couldn't arrest the thieves because they didn't catch them in the act. When they went back to the bed and breakfast they found the robbers in the stairwell and confronted them. The only thing they had of Becca’s was a pair of shoes and her sisters ipad. After that they left Rome but had to go back after the Rome police called them. The police caught the people robbing another place with some of their belongings. The people who robbed her were Gypsies and they flushed anything of Becca’s down the toilet at the police station. After that they left Rome and had no interest of going back to it anytime soon.

  4. The year of 2008 was an extremely difficult one, not just for Lauren, but for the entire Hirsch family. First, her grandfather passed away. Being the first real loss that Lauren had ever been faced with, she really struggled with his passing. Not long after his passing, however, the Hirsch family was thrown yet another curveball... Lauren's mom had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. With the weight of his father's passing, and his wife's sickness, her father suffered through a major depression. Despite being faced with her own sadness over both her grandfather and her mother, Lauren did her best to remain strong for the sake of her family. She trooped on while her mother went through chemo and radiation treatments, and while her father struggled with his depression. About a year and a half after being diagnosed, Lauren’s mom went into remission, and has been cancer-free since. Losing her grandfather, and then being confronted with the possibility losing her mom, is something that will stay with Lauren forever. While not many would be able to, she is uniquely able to see the silver lining of this traumatic period of time in her life. She also values her loved ones even more, and cherishes every single second she spends with them. With her parents both happy and healthy, and her guardian angel watching over her and her family from above, Lauren knows that she can handle any future challenges to come.

  5. It was during Delaney’s high school English class that she got paired up with Dean Delp in order to work on a project together. Three years and three months after exchanging numbers in order to discuss their project Delaney and Dean got engaged. It happened during the August of 2016. The two were at Delaney’s home watching her favorite movie, “The Princess Bride.” Once the movie was over Dean strangely asked Delaney if she could bring him her Claddagh ring. It is a unique Irish traditional ring and it is very meaningful to Delaney because it relates to her heritage. It is special because depending on how and where you wear it it means different things. When Dean and Delaney began dating she wore it on her ring finger of her right hand to show the world that she was taken. She stopped wearing the ring after a short period of time and was confused as to why Dean was asking for it. Regardless, she went up to her room to get it without questioning him and once she returned and handed him the ring Dean got on one knee and popped the question. Delaney was shocked and in her words “freaked out.” She did not cry but instead burst out in full laughter. After saying yes the moment ended abruptly because Dean had to make his way back home. Shortly after getting engaged Dean left the country to go on a mission trip. Delaney and him have limited contact because he is only permitted to send letters and to use his email once a week for two hours. He is also only allowed to Facetime his parents for holidays such as Christmas and Easter. Delaney and Dean plan on getting married on December 21, 2018 once Dean has returned home from his two year mission trip.

  6. For as long as she can remember, Francesca Mathen has traveled to Ecuador with her Mom to visit her family that lives there. When Francesca went to Ecuador for the first time, or at least the first time that she can remember, she cried on the plane because her ears hurt from the air pressure. Arriving in Ecuador, Francesca was greeted by her entire family. Her grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins were all there waiting for their arrival. While she was there, she spent time at her Grandma’s house, visiting her cousins and aunts and uncles that also live there. Ecuador is very different from life here in the United States. People in Ecuador are very poor and often live in small houses with no air conditioning and no internet or television. Although Francesca loves visiting Ecuador, she said that she would never want to live there because of these reasons. The view from her Grandma’s house is stunning. On the horizon, green mountains stretch far and wide, reaching towards the bright blue sky. There is a river that flows out behind her Grandma’s house that Francesca played in with her cousins Melanie, Valeria, and Christopher, and with her sister Caroline too. There are lots of animals in Ecuador that are free ranging. There are cows, chickens, roosters, and horses that roam everywhere throughout Ecuador. When Francesca first saw a free-ranging cow, she was terrified of it because she was afraid it would attack her. Francesca enjoyed listening to the sound of the river and the animals in the forests around her Grandma’s house. She describes Ecuador as peaceful and relaxing. This was just one of the many times that Francesca went to Ecuador, but she tries to go and visit her family there whenever she has the chance.

  7. In October of 2015, Maddie's friend was sleeping over her house because they were planning on running a 5k marathon together the next morning with the rest of their hockey team. When they woke up for breakfast, Maddie began to feel lightheaded and nauseous. At first, it didn't seem to serious but she eventually found herself rushing to the bathroom. When her mother followed, she noted that her face had turned pale and Maddie ended up briefly fainting. Throughout the day, she was throwing up and having horrible stomach pains. When taken to the Emergency Room to further investigate the issue, the person who attended her said it was an infection and so she returned home, although still in pain and vomiting. In time, she found it diffucult to even walk so she returned back to the hospital the following day for another attempt to figure out why this was happening. After having her x-rays taken, it was discovered that her appendix had bursted. Maddie was given a liquid to drink in order to have a catscan done and had to have her appendix removed. Luckily, she only had to spend a few days in the hospital and it was a relatively short recovery time. The surgery caused her to have 3 scars but they were fortunately small incisions and have faded over time.

Along with the normal struggles that any junior high schooler goes through, which there are quite many. From maintaining good grades, to the ACTS and the SATS, to applying to colleges as well as scholarships. Sarah Bryant was faced with an extra burden during her junior year in high school. She was diagnosed with a medical condition and had to miss a lot of school days. You can imagine the stress and the amount of work that she had to endure to keep up with her health as well as her education. Sarah tried to work as hard as she could and she did get As and Bs in all of her classes except for her one math class. Sarah freaked out because of that one class but her counselor comforted her and together they worked on getting Sarah back on track by letting her retake that class her senior year in which she easily passed. The only problem was that by the time, Sarah had finished her class the second time, she had already sent in her applications away to college. Unfortunately, Florida State University, Sarah’s dream college, did not get the updated grades and denied her admission. She was devastated as anyone would be, she did everything she could but the timing just did not allow it. However, Sarah did not give up, she filed an appeal, totally aware of the statistics and the little chances these appeals get to be considered. Filing an appeal itself was quite a lengthy process. Thankfully, It was an opportunity worth capturing because FSU did consider the appeal and Sarah was granted the admission she deserved. That was one of Sarah’s happiest days since it was when she realized all the struggles and the difficulties she had faced, made her stronger and more willing to pursue her dreams.

Four years ago, Monica moved all the way from Egypt to Tallahassee, Florida. This was a cultural shock for Monica and her family. All of a sudden they were thrown into a whole new environment and forced to learn a language very foreign to them. Monica's first year in her public school she mainly struggled with the English language. She recalls really not understanding anything happening in her classes and feeling lost in almost every conversation in English. As time has gone by Monica has adjusted to the American culture while keeping her homeland close to her. She has overcome her language barrier and can now read, write and speak fluently in English and still speak in her native language as well. Monica still lives in Tallahassee with her family and remains very close with her friends back in Egypt. Ever since moving to America Monica has just as equal of a chance to pursue the career she wants. Florida State offers her countless opportunities to express her love for language and reading and writing. America has offered Monica and her family a safe new place full of opportunities to succeed.
