The Big Lebowski Post

The film “The Big Lebowski” uses the detective genre in order to maintain the audiences intrigued throughout the whole movie by having them invest their suspicions and emotions into the outcome of the kidnapping. During the movie Lebowski suspects that Bunny has kidnapped herself therefor he doesn’t take his ransom mission seriously. The detective genre is perpetuated by the plot twists such as Lebowski’s car getting stolen and having his apartment wrecked; both of these events add an element of suspicion because the audience doesn’t know who did either of those things. The blue Volkswagen following him at different points in the movie also maintains the detective genre because there is a long wait to figure out who is in that car and why they are following Lebowski. The film uses the stoner-comedy genre by giving the main character all the typical qualities of a stoner such as being lazy and carefree. The comedy of Lebowski’s traits and actions is heightened especially when he is with his friends. One of the scenes that stood out to me was the scene with Jesus the bowler. This scene depicts the philosophy of ethics when the friends are discussing how Jesus was a pedophile. They discuss how disgusting his actions were and what he had to do as punishment for acting in an inappropriate manner. Jesus displays strange characteristics such as licking the bowling ball and wearing a hair net to a bowling alley. His short dance after bowling a strike added a unique and entertaining aspect to the movie. His language when speaking to the other characters added to his eccentricity because of his vulgarity and his metaphorical threat.
